As always, when reading Anna Del Conte it is as her sitting in the kitchen talking across the table from you. With Del Conte just seeing her name on a book is reason enough for me to buy it without viewing its contents. One can trust anything she writes. I've tried several of the book's recipes, even planted a patch of nettles: This book is spot-on!!!!!Very nice memoir and recipes.First off, anything Anna del Conte writes deserves a thorough reading! This is a delicious book filled with personal tales and wonderful recipes and rich with the sense of family and food and the interconnections between them. I read it in two sittings! And when I had finished I was a little sad that it was all done. Can't recommend this one highly enough.Fantastic easy read. Great recipes and lovely childhood stories.I can see how Nigella Lawson enjoyed this - besides the story the food is also excellent and simple to makeRecently,I read a Divine Remembrance of a Baker/Cook.Waxing Poetically about Her "umbrage" of not being "in the know" of a particular recipe by Mrs.del Conte. From this book,"Risotto with Nettles:A Memoir with Food". A bit of "tongue in cheek".Obviously knowing Mrs. del Conte quite well. These are the Stories that Live! WWII was a Insufferable Time for People in Europe. We,as Americans will Never conceive of "Rationing Tickets" well After a War ended. Tho',Yes,learned how Butter was whipped with Ice Cold water to 'go further' in Recipes and on home~made Bread. "Victory Gardens" to promote helping Nourish Our Country through Fruits/Vegetables.Yet,this book can break a Soul one Moment, next laughing with tears running down Face.Calamity abounded and through Mrs. del Conte's words,We All have a Glimpse as though an Interloper into Her World.May One include a second book title as well? "In Memory's Kitchen". Imprisoned Jewish Women in Concentration Camps would write in Pencil on any Scrap of Paper a Recipe to Remember and literally,"Pass On".This book is Sombre.A Hard Read for Adults or students entering a difficult change of Fortunes may understand Their Plight is Meagre, compared to so Many Souls Never Rescued.Tho' recommend for age 17 and up. Depending on Person's ability to truly Understand The Holocust.A delightful gentle romp through the life of the author that encapsulates so much more than just the story of the food. The eloquent way the author describes events makes you feel simply like tilting your head and saying ah of course that was how it happened. There could be no other wayOh gosh, I’ve just read some of the other reviews and I’m wondering if I’ve read the same book! I found it very two dimensional and boring. I don’t really like to be rude to people when they have written books because I couldn’t do it but I’m afraid that it just didn’t engage me in anyway. Oh, and I do cook and enjoy Italian food..... but I wasn’t inspired to try any of the recipes.I'm in a book group and chose this book for our group to read next. I was looking for something a bit different from our usual fare and the idea of a memoir with food was very appealing. I've loved it as have several of the other ladies in the group. I've enjoyed the history and the cookery. I'm already planning to try out some of the recipes included with each chapter. My only complaint is that I've been hungry ever since I started reading it!Loving Italian food, having Italian friends and living in Dorset I decided to buy this book. It is a warm hearted recollection of a life well led and some recipes as an added extra. Lovely simple book that is easy to read. Recommend.I couldn't put down this book, I enjoyed it so much that I am tempted to read it again and again. Anna has the most extraordinary story and she shares it so beautifully. Highly recommended if you have an interest in Italian cuisine or Italian recent history - mind you, this is not a cookery book, but the recipes at the end of each chapter are a nice bonus. Thank you Anna for sharing your story!
