eXtreme Dog Fence does not manufacturer pet containment systems and related parts as a small part of a larger catalog. Pet containment is their focus. With so many D.I.Y. electric dog fence containment systems being sold today, it's easy to get be enticed by appealing price tags while shopping for your best containment solution value. Unfortunately, one of the key areas that increases a manufacturer's bottom line is in the inclusion of a low grade dog fence wire. Many of these fence kits will still perform as expected, using this thin 20 gauge (or even thinner) boundary wire. However, that cheap wire will typically degrade prematurely in varying climates, and even break. This can leave the owner frustrated at having to go out, locate breaks or degradation points, and repair or replace that factory wire in order to keep their underground dog fence operable. Inground fence wire performance should be the most considered component of any pet fencing system. Here's why: It is the most difficult aspect of an underground dog fence to replace, as it is typically buried It is the one part of your fence that is constantly exposed to the elements (which can fluctuate regularly, and impact the wire's protective coating) A thinner fence wire adds more resistance to your electric dog fence's radio signal, potentially decreasing the maximum coverage area. eXtreme Dog Fence's team of professionals include highly-skilled pet fence manufacturing specialists. In fact, one of their technicians was on the original team that developed the Invisible Fence brand. His capable ingenuity and wisdom have been built upon and perfected with the eXtreme Dog Fence line of products. For Example: Whole Yard Perimeter The standard for full back and front yard coverage. Your twisted wire runs from your transmitter and/or surge protector out to where your boundary loop begins and ends. Each end of twisted wire splices into the boundary wire ends in a one-to-one splice relationship. This creates a closed circuit with the transmitter. Front or Back Pinch Enclose your front or back yard, but allow your pet(s) access to the house without receiving a correction when crossing the door's threshold. Run your wire from the transmitter, around the desired yard. When you reach the other side of the house, (rather than bringing the wire across that threshold), continue to run the wire around the other side of the house, tight enough to prevent access to that yard. Continue running your wire back to where you started, and back to the transmitter. One Side Only Create a barrier on only one side of your yard and still complete a closed loop with your transmitter. Run your wire in a rectangle layout (with rounded corners), keeping a minimum 3' separation between the run up and the run back. Then splice the two wire ends to your twisted wire, on a one-to-one relationship. The other end of your twisted wire will run back and connect to your transmitter. Existing Fence Complement your existing fence by preventing jumping or digging. Using a vertical 'double loop' layout, you run your wire from the transmitter, along the bottom of your existing fence. At the end of the physical fence, you run your wire up the side and then back along the same path, but at the top, and back to the transmitter. The wire separation needs to be a minimum of 3 feet, in order to prevent correction cancelation. Read more

I bought this and used it for a radio shock collar dog fence placed in ground & on top of an existing wire fence enclosing just under an acre. It arrived as anticipated within 2 days. Product was great, no problems, continuous length on spool. At time of purchase, I did find 1000' of 14 ga. solid core outdoor rated wire a little cheaper on dedicated wire sales sites, but with Prime and free 2 day shipping (1000' 14ga. spool is heavy) this was the best option. Home improvement stores I checked only carried 500' on the shelves, and I did not check electrical supply warehouses. The insulation and higher gauge conductor is much more durable than the 18-22 ga. included in the dog collar kit I bought and this is better rated for UV exposure which will last longer in my application. The higher gauge allowed me to actually pull the full 1000' around the property fence (winding 90 degrees around corner posts and thru trees) as I was not going to trench and bury 1000', especially with tree roots everywhere. At the start of my fence, I placed a dowel in the spool which was then placed top of a open box to free spin, I tied a loop in the pulling end and leaned into my pulling direction (hint: when you get going don't stop). I fastened by zip-tying to top of existing T-post/wire fencing around the property, and buried wire at gates using a pvc sleeve from top of fence down into ground for weedeater/wear-n-tear protection. If you're pulling long distance with some friction/resistance, want a longer lasting alternative to the regular kit wire, or need better UV protection for your wire, go with this. This company clearly has zero quality control. For what is supposed to be "premium" wire, the plastic coating on the copper wire is applied in a sloppy and useless manner. The copper wire should be centered in the plastic coating, so there is even thickness of coatng around the entire wire. The spool I received was not even close...with the coating applied so sloppily that the thinnest part of the coating exposes the bare wire with the faintest of scratches. And the bare copper is exposed in several places before I even began unspooling it. Proper insulation is the most basic requirement of ANY wire, and this utterly fails. Totally useless for invisible fence installation. Do not waste your time or money on this product. My biggest dislike... the spool was made cheaply. Either when the ups dropped it off or in transit. Very disappointing when I opened the box. The spool just came apart. So what I thought was going to be an easy install took ten times longer. Had to hand unspool the mess of 3000 ft of wire by hand. The wire itself is amazing. I am glad I went with the continuous loop with no connections. Very difficult putting in the ground though with a broken spool. The warning signs were there when the box arrived with the 1000ft spool of wire. It was thrown into a huge box(24 in Long x 15 in Wide x 12 inch Tall) with two plastics air bag packing strips that were popped- deflated. Remember this is 1000ft spool (8in x 10in) of copper wire and weighs almost 20 Lbs. The box was ripped by the spool bouncing around during shipment. The card board/press board spool was cracked, bent and frayed- I can only assume- as a result of bouncing around in the box. I examined the wire and the comments from other reviews were confirmed. The copper wire seems to be good- 14 gauge- however, the plastic covering/insulation is very stiff and hard and non-pliable. As I looked at the spool - I could see at least one visible break in the plastic and exposed copper wire --and the wire is still on the spool!! Other reviews have commented about broken insulation and exposed wire while they were installing the wire. I am not going to pay this much money and start installing over 800 ft of wire that I know is already defective. I selected this gauge and length of wire to try and avoid breakage issues and all the associated wasted time trying to find the break in an 800 ft plus wire fence.I do not recommend this product especially for the price they are asking.....very cheap clips were the wires go in on power supply and control module they broke on assembly attemptThe wire was shipped in good timing and was great quality, works great.I used 970 ft of the 1000 ft roll for my acre and a half and the signal strength is goodI had only two splices, one at my driveway culvert to feed it through and the other to connect to a twisted pair spool I purchased also to cancel the signal going to my garage. We soldered the joints and used a shrink wrap and all weather tap to seal the connections.I have moles in my yard and they were breaking the 20 gauge wire I had before. This wire is tough and I know it will last a long time.Much better than the cheap thin yellow stuff that came with the collar. Time will tell how well it holds up, but much thicker and tougher. Edit 4 years later - Still great stuff. Until the new dog chewed through it! Fantastic resistance to the natural environment but keep your dog from chewing it. We had one dog that wore the collar as he was small and would dig under the fence. The collar and electric wire worked great against him. The other dog was bigger and did not need a collar, but he was able to get to the wire and chew it.Reasonably priced. Strong. Produces wider field than other smaller wire I have used. Thick insulation and more flexible than I expected and requires no more effort to install. I am going to replace all of my older 20 gauge wire with this wire. I have purchased 1500' and will probably need a bit more, although I am narrowing the area covered. I am so frustrated with the number of breaks with the thin wire. I believe this 14 gauge wire will also allow my sending unit to be more useful especially in regulating field size and strength of signal.
