It is said that a writer should write what they know about, although an overused statement, it does in fact ring true – that is if the subject is something that the writer is passionate about. Simone does in fact know about her subject – The Denver dining scene. Not only a veteran of the industry, but she’s also an active observer and an integral part of it. Simone is passionate about our crazy industry and it shows not only because of the work that goes into the unbelievably deep research of the book but because of how it is written – it’s a love story. In every chapter it is a common thread that runs through her words and the people and places that she highlights. And it’s easy to see why – the characters – be it a chef, a winemaker, a restaurateur, a worldly cause, or even a historic building; the make up is all Denver. It’s her love affair with our line of work that makes the reader feel as if they were there, or at the very least long for a time that there was a purity and authenticity in the act of feeding people for money. She reveals a time when we did this out of love – not for celebrity and brand building but as an honorable trade. We’re craftsmen/women and she writes beautifully about our ‘art’. Although I’m not featured in the book directly, this is my personal history too. I worked for and with these people my entire career and I can attest from experience that her illustration is spot on. Denver needed this book. I needed this book. I needed a good love story.
